Edwin Lawrence Wacker, 96, of Hoyleton died at 8:27 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2003 at Canterbury Manor in Waterloo. He was born August 8, 1906 in Hoyleton, son of Fred and Anna (Garnholz) Wacker. He was married to Leona Hoffman on January 4, 1941 in Hoyleton. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1995. Surviving are three sons, George Wacker and wife Alixa of Los Angeles, California, Lloyd Wacker and wife Betty of Waterloo, and Curtis Wacker and wife Donna of Ballwin, Missouri; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Viola Finke of Centralia. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius and Waldo Wacker; and three sisters, Hulda Huck, Alice Spenner and Olga Wacker. Mr. Wacker was a farmer and lived in Hoyleton his entire life. He was an active member of Bethel Methodist Church in Hoyleton until its closing, then joined Zion Evangelical UCC. He was a former member of Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education, North Prairie Cemetery Board and the Farm Bureau. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Evangelical UCC in Hoyleton, with the Rev. William Causer officiating. Organist was Lois Schorfheide. Burial was at North Prairie Cemetery in rural Hoyleton. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Children's Home in Mt. Vernon or to Hoyleton Children's Home. 115. Carl Frederic Backsmeyer [scrapbook] (Mabel Edna Stelzriede , Carl Heinrich (Charley) , Johann Heinrich , Johann Heinrich , Johann Friedrich Wilhelm ) was born on 24 Jul 1918 in Hoyleton, IL. He died on 21 Jan 1972 in Nashville, IL. He was buried on 24 Jan 1972 in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Centralia, IL.

The name Backsmeier was misspelled (with a "y" instead of "i") on Carl Frederic's birth certificate and was never changed.

Graduated from Centralia Township High School with Class of 1937.

Carl and his cousin, Bud Brink, operated a taxi cab business out of Gus Backsmeier's, Carl's father, Star gasoline service station and auto repair garage. The building was at the corner of Locust St. & 17th St. in Wamac. IL. The taxi business operated from about 1938 to 1940.

Carl took flying lesson in a Stearman, two person open cockpit, two wing plane at a small airport between Centralia and Sandoval, IL about 1939. The cost of the flying lessons were expensive and he quit after three months.

He successfully completed an 8 week sheet metal school in late 1941 at St Louis. MO. His roommate was William B. Eaton Jr. of Normal, IL and they were hired by Hayes Aircraft Manufacturing in Grand Rapids, MI after finishing the course in 1942. Carl and Bill Eaton did the sheet metal work on the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt a tactical fighter bomber. The fighter aircraft was nicknamed the "Jug" for its bulky shape. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and after WWII returned to Normal, IL This information was provided by Bill Eaton Jr. on March 18. 2004.

Carl and Bernice lived at 333 Paris Avenue, Grand Rapids, MI when he was employed by Hayes Aircraft Mfg.

The Marion County Military Draft Board classified Carl as 4F because of a "heart murmur" and he was exempt from being drafted into to the armed forces during World War II, Dec. 7, 1941 - 1945.

Carl was awarded $675 for submitting time and money suggestions to his employer, the United States Army Aviation Material Command, St Louis, MO. His recommendation reportedly saved the government $40,000 annually.

Then after WWII he and his family returned to the Centralia, IL area.

  202 F i Peggy Carlene Backsmeyer [scrapbook] was born on 8 Apr 1943 in Grand Rapids, MI. She died on 6 Nov 1999 in Belleville, IL. She was buried on 9 Nov 1999 in Plum Hill, IL.

Peggy died of leukemia cancer diagnosed a month earlier and was optimistic for a recovery. After a few weeks of treating a fungus from a sinus infection, the illness ravaged her body that no longer had an immune system.

She managed the Super 8 Motel of Okawville. IL until mid August 1999 when the business was sold.

Her funeral service was held at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Okawville, IL on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 11:00 A.M with Pastor Jeffery Schwab officiating. Pallbearers were Lyle Hackstadt. Lloyd Hackstadt, Chad Hackstadt. Kent Hackstadt. Dennis Hoelscher and Nathan Bartling.

The Campagna Funeral Home of Okawville, was in charge of the arrangements.

        Peggy married Wayne W Hackstadt on 27 Jan 1962 in Plum Hill, IL. Wayne was born on 12 May 1943 in Belleville, IL. He died on 3 Jul 2003 in Belleville, IL. He was buried on 7 Jul 2003 in Plum Hill, IL.

Wayne was baptized at the home of his parents. Ordell and Albena (nee Meyer) Hackstadt on June 6, 1943 by Rev. F.W. Weltge. Wayne was confirmed in St. John United Church of Christ, Plum Hill, Washington County, IL by Rev. WeDge on April 14. 1957. Pastor Jeffery Schwab of St. Peter United of Christ in Okawville, IL was the officiant of the funeral service.

He was a dock hand at Centralia Cartage. later known as Associated Truck Lines and later as ANR Freight Systems located in St. Louis. MO. Wayne was a member of Teamsters Local #600 also in St. Louis. Wayne was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ at Okawville, Washington County, IL where he had served on the church council. He was a member of the Addieville Fire Department.
Pallbearers at his funeral were Chad Hackstadt. Kent Hackstadt, Lyle Hackstadt, Lloyd Hackstadt, Brian Nelson. Nathan Bartling.
